PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS: The United States Congress designated March as National Women’s History Month in 1987; and
WHEREAS: The City of Salem, Massachusetts, has benefited from the contributions of women for well over four centuries, from its earliest days as the Native American village of Naumkeag, through fast-paced colonial development, through its dominance in maritime trade, through its shift to industrialization, to today’s Salem, a thriving, diverse city that honors the contributions of all of its citizens, past and present; and
WHEREAS: One of the most momentous events in American women’s history, the 1692 Salem Witch Trials, took place in Salem, Massachusetts, forever changing our national judicial system for the better; and
WHEREAS: Women like Caroline Emmerton, philanthropist, preservationist, and social services provider; Caroline Plummer, cultural and educational philanthropist; Sarah Parker Remond, anti-slavery lecturer; and Elizabeth Peabody, editor, publisher and educator worked tirelessly to make the world better for future generations; and
WHEREAS: Organizations like the Salem Female Anti-Slavery Society, Woman Suffrage Club of Salem, and the Salem Women’s Indian Association applied the principles of the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution to everyone; and
WHEREAS: Organizations like the Woman’s Friend Society, Boys & Girls Club, The House of the Seven Gables, Brookhouse, and Salem Hospital, founded a century ago, continue to provide important services for our community; and
WHEREAS: Telling inspirational stories from women’s history benefits our young people today by presenting a balanced version of history, providing role models, and proving that women and men have shaped our past and will define our future together; and
WHEREAS: Salem residents, businesses, members of the cultural community, and the Salem Maritime National Historic Site will celebrate Salem women’s history on March 27 of this year with a walking tour, lecture, displays, and special offerings;
